Are you planning to migrate to Australia and feeling nervous about the English test? You’re not alone—and if you think you can skip it, think again! In this episode of Making Australian Migration Easy, Rhea Fawole, CEO of SOLVi Migration, is joined by Juan Vergara from E2 Language to break down why English exams are one of the biggest hurdles for skilled migrants and nurses—and how to pass them without the stress and wasted attempts.
For many applicants, failing the English test is what delays their visa or registration the most. And for others, the fear of failing keeps them from even starting the process. This episode offers practical advice, expert guidance, and a smarter way forward.
Before you can work as a nurse, get sponsored by an employer, or apply for a skilled visa, you’ll need to prove your English proficiency. That means passing an approved test—usually IELTS, PTE, or OET—with a score that meets the requirements for your visa or registration.
Why is this step so important?
✅ It’s required for most skilled visas and employer sponsorships.
✅ It’s part of AHPRA registration if English isn’t your primary language.
✅ It determines whether you can move forward with your migration goals.
🔹 Pro Tip: Even if you’re an experienced professional, English tests follow strict marking guidelines. What you say or write isn’t enough—it’s how you say it that matters!
Step 2: The Biggest Mistakes to Avoid
Juan from E2 Language shared the most common reasons why people fail their English test: ❌ Studying alone without expert feedback
❌ Repeating the test without changing your strategy
❌ Believing myths about exemptions or requirements
Many applicants think they can “just give it a go”—but repeated failures cost time, money, and confidence.
🔹 Pro Tip: Failing once or twice often costs more than doing a prep course upfront. Invest in your success early.
There are three main types of skills assessments:
1️⃣ Full Skills Assessment – For nurses without AHPRA registration who want to migrate independently.
2️⃣ Modified Assessment – For nurses with AHPRA registration, there is no need for additional qualification verification.
3️⃣ Modified PLUS – For nurses with AHPRA registration who require formal confirmation of qualification comparability.
Choosing the wrong pathway or submitting the wrong documentation can delay or even derail your visa application.
